Description
The current study proposed a solution to the complex task of monitoring scour remotely and in real time. This solution utilizes the magnetostrictive properties of Alfenol and Galfenol to create flow sensors inspired by the whiskers of sea mammals.
These sensors are capable of sensing whether they are buried under a river bed or in flowing water. Using the readings from these flow sensors and knowledge of their depths, scour severity can be determined. Two different bridges sites have each been installed with two scour monitoring systems based on the proposed sensor post solution.
